“Fund for the Next Fifty” Campaign

What is it?

Launched with our 2016 Spring Benefit and in celebration of our fiftieth production, Mint Theater Company’s “Fund for the Next Fifty” directly supports our next fifty productions of lost or neglected plays.

Why should I give to the “Fund for the Next Fifty”?

All donations made to the fund will directly support fees and salaries paid to the actors, directors, and designers involved in our next fifty productions beginning with A DAY BY THE SEA by N.C. Hunter (July – September, 2016). That means 100% of your tax-deductible contribution will be spent on the artists who make our plays—not on office rent, administrative salaries, fundraising costs, supplies, equipment, utilities, or any other administrative costs.

This year, we’ll be increasing actor salaries by 10%. It’s an expense we’re happy to pay—but it does mean we’ll need your support. Our “Fund for the Next Fifty” will help us to provide plenty of rewarding opportunities for our artists for years to come. Our productions feature large casts of actors who relish the opportunity to be in great plays with long runs, playing to full houses of appreciative audience members like you!

What is the goal?

We’re aiming to raise a total of $500,000 by June 30, 2017.

That seems ambitious…

Maybe so, but we’re already one-fifth of the way there.

Impressive! But how is that possible?

In December of 2014, we received a $95,000 grant from the Edith Meiser Foundation at the recommendation of trustee Carol Wasser. Below is how she explains her decision to fund us:

Edith Meiser was an actress who began in vaudeville and then conquered Broadway. She was also a Councilor of Actors’ Equity Association for many years; she had a sound grasp of business and finance, as well as a strong sense of right and justice. She always kept Equity on the right path.

When the trustees of the Edith Meiser Foundation concluded that it was time to dissolve the foundation, we decided that each of the eight trustees would choose one or more organizations for a final round of grants.  Each trustee would distribute one-eighth of the remaining funds.  I chose the Mint Theater to receive this grant.  When I was the Eastern Regional Director of Actors’ Equity, the Mint always had an excellent reputation, not only for the quality of the work, but for the respect with which the artists were treated.  It is my hope that this grant will enable the Mint to enhance the actors’ work experience at the theatre, and that in this way the Mint will continue to honor Edith Meiser.

We’re eager to live up to Carol’s expectation and honor Edith Meiser’s commitment to the remarkable actors and artists who make our work possible. That’s why we’ve chosen to begin our “Fund for the Next Fifty” with the foundation’s generous $95,000 grant. We hope you’ll decide to help grow our fund with a contribution of any size.

The Mint had a wonderful night with artists and friends, on May 23rd at Colony Club, for a joyful spring Celebration of Mint Theater Company. Proceeds from the evening went to launch our “Fund for the Next Fifty,” an important new initiative to support Mint’s next fifty productions!

We also celebrated some of the many folks who have been in the audience for the last two decades, intrepid theatergoers who have seen nearly every one of Mint’s first fifty productions and are looking forward to the next fifty.

As you know, Mint’s favorite way of looking forward is by looking back, so the evening featured some of our favorite actors and authors, with a hint of things to come in the future.

We hope to see you at next year’s benefit and at many of Mint’s next fifty productions!
